Vomiting bugs: why I’m buying shares in disinfectant

Just recently a vomiting bug swept through my children’s school before rampaging across my family.

It wheezled its way in via my eldest daughter, most of whose class were laid low. It then attacked my little boy two nights in a row, caught my middle daughter, returned to my eldest, laid off my kids’ childcarer, and finally had its wicked way with me on one miserable, confined-to-bed weekend. Oh, and then there it was again, with my middle one.

I fought back. I sterilised door handles, banisters, Playmobil, books and a whole tub of Lego. (It’s amazing how long it takes to clean Lego. One. Brick. At. A. Time.)

I did so many loads of washing that I lost count.

In desperation, I paid to have the carpets cleaned, thinking that the bug must be living in the fibres, multiplying lustily.

But the bug hadn’t finished its fiendish masterplan. Once the vomiting had subsided, it lingered on for days in each of us, unsettling stomachs and diminishing energy levels. So much so that we then came down with a horrible cold the week after.

But there is a positive to all this. Finally (*sighing wearily*) I think the children now ‘get’ why I bang on about washing their hands with soap after going to the loo and before meals: they have seen some very valid reasons for themselves.

I’m no longer considered ‘naggy’ or ‘annoying’. Just offering a helpful, timely reminder service.

The next step: to buy shares in household disinfectant. I can’t be the only parent stockpiling the ultimate weaponry in our bug-fighting arsenal.

Yep, huge money-spinner here, I say, rubbing my red-raw, sore, over-washed hands in anticipation. Can’t wait.

Aww poor kiddos! I hope they’re recovering well now? I was stuck with awful cold for few days and hate this never ending running nose! When it comes to cleaning I can’t help but like bleach and Viakal!

That sounds like a very nasty bug. We’ve never been unlucky enough to have it rebounding around the family like that and it must be hell on earth.

Oh dear it really sounds like you have been having a rough time. There seems to have been so many bugs around that no one can shift, it seems like someone in our house has been ill since Christmas! Roll on the nice weather and hopefully all bugs will disappear!

I know a few people that have had this bug. I guess schools spread it like wildfire. It is so important to wash hands with hot soapy water, I am glad your children realise this now. Hope you all feel better soon.

Poor you, I detest stomach bugs!!! When my older children were little my husband & I used to always get them too and like you we would just go around in circles. It was horrible.

Touch wood, dare I say it, I have only had one sick bug in the last seven years, and can confine any sickness with the youngest just to him nowadays. (Hand gel is my friend) Probably also has to do with the older ones being obsessive about staying away from him!

Hope you all feel back to normal soon.

We had this a few weeks ago, we kept whoever was ill at the time to the bedroom and en-suite and luckily managed to keep the bug away from Fred! xx
