A serenade to the summer holidays

Here we are – back in the thick of uniform shopping, work deadlines and scrawling dates for upcoming school events on the calendar. And my summer holiday seems a very long time ago.

But it was actually only two weeks ago that I was in the Loire valley in France, knee-deep in lazy mornings, baguettes, card games with the eldest two and even a snatched wine-tasting (when the kids weren’t looking).

My favourite 6 things from this summer:

  1. Pain aux raisins for breakfast. My favourite pastry in the whole wide world. But they have to be eaten in France.

  2. The first summer of really long cycle rides now that the eldest two have more stamina and my three-year-old is still happy in his bike seat behind me. I enjoyed every minute of these bike rides, as by next summer, he’ll certainly be too big to sit to squidge into that seat, and will probably be trying to master his own set of wheels.
  3. Delicious local sauvignon blanc.
  4. Managing to get through a clutch of books, finally.
  5. Lazy evenings with a glass of wine, my book and (whisper it) an early night.
  6. The  playground on our campsite, which starred basic gymnastics equipment, like rings. So simple and yet so popular. Why have I never seen them in UK playgrounds?

Hope you all had a good summer. Here’s to autumn.

Love, love, love pain aux raisin but I’m wheat intolerant so can’t eat them. Boo :( I will make do with extra glass of chilled white 😉

I adore pain aux raisins. It sounds like you had a great summer holiday. I feel like the summer has gone far too quickly although I must admit it’s nice to be back into some kind of routine again, especially at bedtime.
