Eating the seasons and other healthy eating tips
We all want our children to eat a healthy range of foods so that they have nutritionally-balanced diets. The long-term plan: to help them learn to love good food for life. But right now, today, when you’re always so busy and every day is a tired day, it can sometimes feel like you’re knocking your head against your wall.
Here are a few tricks that help me:
Eating the seasons
I try to buy fruit and veg that’s in season when I can. Fruit or veg that is farmed locally – or at least in the UK – hasn’t covered long distances in a plane or in transit. And if it hasn’t been hanging around, it’ll still have much of its vitamin and mineral content. Plus it’s cheaper for you, and helps to support local farmers.
I think it’s also a handy way to liven up your meals – you’re less likely to get stuck in a rut as you’ll be cooking dishes that are a bit different each month.
The trouble is that if you shop mainly in supermarkets, it can be difficult to tell exactly what’s in season. So for a bit of help, I like the Eat the Seasons website. It lists exactly what’s in season each month, from meat and fish to fruit, veg and herbs.
Of course, I do also buy family must-haves out of season, for example cucumbers and, right now, strawberries – sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.
Grow (a little) veg
Our garden is teeny but it’s surprising what you can grow in bags and containers. Last year, we grew potatoes and tomatoes. This year we’ll be growing spinach, carrots and peas. We also have a raspberry plant in a container. The kids help choose and plant this year’s crops. Okay, this isn’t about bringing in a mega-harvest, but the kids still seem inspired.
I love the look of a dish that has a dash of green to balance out reds, yellows and browns. I think it looks really cheerful and much more appetising. Even in soup – I’ve nicked my mum’s trick of swirling frozen peas into soup a few minutes before it’s served – it’s another chance to sneak in some extra nutrition. The kids like them too, I promise!
